The USS ESSEX was the lead ship of the Essex Class of aircraft carriers and the fourth ship in the Navy to bear the name. Building of USS Essex CV-9The keel of the Essex CV-9 was laid in the spring of 1941 by the Newport News Shipbuilding (NNS) in Virginia. It was commissioned on December 31, 1942 and reached the Pacific Fleet in August 1943.
